(Gray News) – Thousands of gun safes have been recalled because of a potential injury hazard.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, several brands, including Bulldog Cases, Machir, MouTec, and Awesafe, have recalled several versions of their biometric safes because the biometric lock on the safe can be opened by unauthorized users which can pose a “serious injury hazard and risk of death.”
The Safety Commission reported about 120,520 safes are impacted by the recall.
Three versions of the Bulldog Cases safe, the Magnum Biometric Pistol Vault, the Magnum Biometric Pistol Vault with Shelf and the Magnum Biometric Top Load Pistol Vault, have been recalled. About 33,500 products were recalled.
The safes were sold at Bass Pro Shops, Walmart, Amazon and firearm stores nationwide through July 2016 and January 2024.
Certain models of the Machir Biometric Personal Safe have also been recalled. About 24,820 units were impacted.
The safes measure about 10 inches by 14 inches by 10 inches and have a serial number on the lower right corner of the front door of the safe. Consumers can check the recall report to see if their safe’s serial number is included in the list of recalled products.
The Machir safes were sold at Walmart, both in-store and online, and on Machir.com from July 2019 to approximately Sept. 2021.
About 2,200 units of the brand MouTec’s BBRKIN Biometric Gun Safe have been recalled as well. The impacted safes have the model number QCJJ01 and are within the serial range, SQ202121000 through SQC202247603.
The safes were sold exclusively on Amazon from Sept. 2021 through Feb. 2023.
About 60,000 certain Awesafe biometric gun safes were recalled. The safes are reported to be black, fit two pistols and have the brand’s name on the front. They were sold at Walmart and Amazon from Aug. 201 through Dec. 2022.
Altogether, there have been about 91 reports of the safe being opened by an unauthorized user but no injuries have been reported.
Consumers should immediately stop using the biometric feature of the safe, remove the batteries and only use the key to store firearms inside the safe. They should also contact the safe’s brand for further instructions or a replacement safe.
