On Saturday, Feb. 23, Thomas James Wolford, 32, of Rose Township, was arraigned in Oakland County 52/1 District Court for carrying a concealed weapon (five-year felony), careless discharge of firearm causing injury of death (two-year misdemeanor) and firearms possession while under the influence (93-day misdemeanor).
Personal bond was set at $10,000 with the next court appearance on March 3, before 52/2 District Court Judge Kelly Kostin.
This case stems from an incident on Feb. 22, at 7:45 p.m.,
Holly Police Chief Jerry Narsh said Holly police officers were dispatched to a residence on E. Maple Street for a report of a male with a gunshot wound. Officers discovered a 28-year-old Rose Township man lying in the front yard of the Maple Street address with a gunshot wound to his right hip and buttock area.
There was a pickup truck in the driveway with a second male hiding behind the truck. The victim reported that the passenger, Wolford, had accidentally shot him with a pistol. Wolford was secured and a loaded semiautomatic handgun was recovered at the scene.
Narsh said the investigation revealed that both men are co-workers and friends who were returning home from a night out. The victim was driving and stopped the vehicle on a dirt road to relieve himself. When he returned to the vehicle, he heard a loud pop and felt pressure in his right side.
Wolford had a handgun concealed in his pants pocket and was removing it to place it in a backpack when the firearm allegedly discharged, striking the driver. The victim drove a short distance to a friend’s house on E. Maple Street to summon police and medical assistance. Both men confirmed the details of the events.
Wolford was found to be intoxicated, and did not possess a concealed pistol license. He was arrested and lodged at the Oakland County Jail. The victim was transported to a medical facility for a serious, but non-life-threatening wound.
